4 x 300g Alto Don Diego Association from Nariño, Colombia
Farmer: Alto Don Diego Association
Variety: Castillo, Caturra, Colombia
Country: Nariño region of Colombia
This coffee is most definitely a favorite from our Head of Roasting! Scoring extremely well in our Q-grader 'blind tasting' sessions.
Established in May 2014, The Alto Don Diego Association is a collaboration between 18 small-scale farms in the Tominango municipality of Nariño, Colombia (some less than a hectare in size), and a team of both international and local agronomists.
Its intent was to empower these farmers to overcome the immense social and economic difficulties of this region, and instead improve their quality of life through Direct Trade by providing a premium quality coffee product, learn best practices in business, and train in social and environmental sustainability.
The farmers all work together on the steep hills of their collective farms, picking only perfectly ripe cherry entirely by hand in a week-long peak harvest period, prior to subsequent wet-milling, 18 hour fermentation, and patio drying processes, all of which are done locally.
This Nariño coffee offers a truly unique combination of terroir and conditions, resulting in a very special sweetness of the cup — a product of the sunlight and temperature deltas of these equatorial regions, and the leafy shade and high altitude (1500-1700m) volcanic soils of the Doña Juana volcano slopes on which they are grown.
Head of Roasting Tasting Notes: Chocolate, Cinnamon, Cream, Strawberries, American Cookies. Nice full body and strawberry acidity.
